Red Sox Announce Special Olympics and Belle of the Ball as the Next Recipients of the "100 Acts of Kindness"
The Boston Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation today announced that the Special Olympics Flagship Summer Games and Belle of the Ball will be the next two recipients of the “100 Acts of Kindness,” a program that recognizes and supports the work of charitable organizations throughout New England during Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary season. With the completion of these two acts, the total number of special recipients of the “100 Acts of Kindness” will total 31.
Special Olympics Summer Flagship Games:On Saturday, June 16, Red Sox employees will volunteer at the Special Olympic Summer Flagship Games as “Track and Field Escorts,” welcoming athletes into the staging tent and accompanying them to the track for their race. The volunteers will also cheer on participants as they compete. The Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities. Through the power of sports, they help people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. The Red Sox volunteers will be at Harvard Stadium, located at 65 North Harvard Street, Allston, MA, from 11:30 to 3 p.m. on June 16.
Belle of the Ball:On Tuesday, June 26, the Red Sox and Red Sox wives will hold a dress drive at Fenway Park to collect gently used prom, bridesmaid, and formal wear dresses to benefit Belle of the Ball, an organization that donates free dresses to high school girls who are unable to afford them for their prom or homecoming dances. Purses, jewelry, and accessories will also be accepted. The donations will be used to help girls in need of dresses and accessories during the 2013 prom and homecoming season. Those interested in donating a dress or other formal wear items can bring them to Fenway Park’s Player’s Club, entering through Gate B, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26. Dresses will also be accepted from ticketed fans attending the game against the Toronto Blue Jays until 7:30 p.m.
About the 100 Acts of Kindness:As a way to highlight and support the important work done by the many charitable institutions throughout New England and beyond, the Red Sox are engaging in “100 Acts of Kindness” with various not-for-profit organizations during the 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park in 2012. These acts will take on a number of different forms, including donations, volunteer efforts, and hosting community events. Each act will be designed to highlight organizations and causes throughout New England. Red Sox ownership, players, alumni, and staff will participate. Additional acts will be announced throughout 2012, culminating with 100 by the end of this 100th Anniversary year.
