A's pitcher Andrew Carignan undergoes right elbow surgery

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics announced today that right-handed relief pitcher Andrew Carignan has undergone successful reconstructive surgery to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The surgery was performed this morning in New York City by Dr. David Altchek, medical director of the New York Mets.  While Carignan’s recovery time is still undetermined, he will miss the remainder of the 2012 season.

Carignan, 25, had posted a 1-1 record and 4.66 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season before being placed on the 15-day disabled list June 6 with a sprained elbow.  Oakland’s fifth-round pick in the 2007 Draft, the New London, Conn. Native was transferred to the 60-day DL June 9.
