Minnesota Twins to “Turn Back the Clock” Against the Kansas City Royals on June 30 at 6:10 p.m.

Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn. – The Minnesota Twins are looking forward to their “Turn Back the Clock” game on Saturday, June 30 at 6:10 p.m. against the Kansas City Royals. During the game, the Twins will celebrate Minnesota baseball history by wearing throwback uniforms of the 1951 Minneapolis Millers and the first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a Millers pennant. Named for the city’s flour milling heritage, the Minneapolis Millers played in the Mill City from 1884-1960. The Kansas City Royals will be wearing throwback uniforms of the Kansas City Blues.

“While generations of residents may not even be aware of the Minneapolis Millers, or that a 4,000 seat ballpark once stood at 31st and Nicollet, we’re proud to celebrate and remember this important time in Minnesota baseball history,” said Clyde Doepner, Twins Curator. “The Minneapolis Millers stoked the fires of America’s burgeoning new pastime at the turn of the 20th Century and for more than 6-decades, this area was a hotbed for great baseball featuring many of the greatest players the game has ever known.”

Among the baseball greats to don the Millers uniform over the years were Ted Williams, who won the American Association’s Triple Crown as a 19-year old Miller in the summer of 1938. Babe Ruth appeared in a Millers uniform, if only for one day in 1935. Joe Hauser set a Professional Baseball record with 69 Home Runs during the 1933 season.

During the “Turn Back the Clock” game, the Twins will be remembering 1951, a year that saw Willie Mays roam Center Field at Nicollet Park, putting the baseball world on notice by posting a .477 average with 30 RBI and 38 runs scored in his 35-games with the Millers. Occupying Center Field for the Kansas City Blues of the American Association that same year was baseball legend Mickey Mantle.

“The Twins are proud to remember this important part of Minnesota’s great baseball heritage as the teams don the uniforms of the Minneapolis Millers and Kansas City Blues,” said Doepner. “This is truly a case of past meets present at Target Field; a ballpark that will one day be a revered place in baseball history.”
