Padres select RHP Kip Wells from Tucson and recall RHP Nick Vincent from San Antonio

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today selected right-handed pitcher Kip Wells from Triple-A Tucson and recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Vincent from Double-A San Antonio.  The club also optioned both infielder Andy Parrino and right-hander Brad Boxberger to Tucson and transferred right-hander Joe Wieland from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Wells, 35, was signed to a minor league contract by the Padres earlier this season on May 8. In seven starts for Triple-A Tucson, he has gone 1-4 with a 4.97 ERA (21 ER/38.0 IP).  The right-hander is scheduled to start the Padres 5:05 p.m. PT game against the Houston Astros tonight at Minute Maid Park.  Originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the first round (16^th overall) of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, Wells has gone 67-99 with a 4.71 ERA (681 ER/1301.0 IP) over 289 Major League games, 212 starts, for the White Sox (1999-2001), Pittsburgh Pirates (2002-06), Texas Rangers (2006), St. Louis Cardinals (2007), Colorado Rockies (2008), Kansas City Royals (2008), Washington Nationals (2009) and Cincinnati Reds (2009).

Vincent, 25, is making his second stint with the Padres this season. The right-hander’s first appearance will be his Major League debut.  In 18 games between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson this season, he has gone 1-1 with a 6.38 ERA (13 ER/18.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts against seven walks, including 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA (2 ER/9.2 IP) and 15 strikeouts against no walks and just four hits allowed over his last nine outings, all for Double-A San Antonio. A native of Poway, Calif. and graduate of Ramona High School (CA), he was signed by the Padres as an 18^th-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and was selected to the club’s 40-man roster this past offseason.  The right-hander also attended Palomar Junior College and Long Beach State University before joining the Padres organization. 

Parrino, 26, was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list on June 24. In 40 games for San Diego this year, he has hit .174 (16-for-92) with four doubles, one home run, three RBI and seven runs scored.  The switch-hitter has started 24 games for San Diego this year, with 18 at shortstop, five at second base and one at third base.  He made his Major League debut for the Padres last season and made his first career Opening Day roster this year. Over 64 Big League games in his career, Parrino has hit .176 (24-for-136) with five doubles, one home run, seven RBI and 10 runs scored.

Boxberger, 24, was selected from Triple-A Tucson on June 10 and made his Major League debut for the Padres that day against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.  In five relief outings total for San Diego, he has posted a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) with eight strikeouts and seven walks allowed. In 22 relief appearances for the Tucson Padres this year, he is 1-2 with five saves and a 4.70 ERA (12 ER/23.0 IP).

Wieland, 22, was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 11 with a strained right elbow. The right-hander made his Big League debut for San Diego this year and is 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA (14 ER/27.2 IP) in five starts with the Padres.
