Pirates claimes Oscar Tejeda off waivers from Boston

The Pirates have claimed infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejeda off waivers from Boston and have assigned him to Double-A Altoona.

Tejeda has been placed on the 40-man roster and LHP Doug Slaten has been designated for assignment.

The 22-year old Tejeda entered the 2012 season ranked by Baseball America as the second-best second base prospect in the Boston organization and the No. 24 prospect overall in the Red Sox system.  He was also named Boston’s No. 15 prospect by MLB.com prior to the 2012 campaign.

In 51  games with Double-A Portland this season, Tejeda hit .262 (53-for-202) with 15 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI. 

The right-handed hitter spent the entire 2011 season with Portland, where he  was the fifth-youngest regular in the league at age 21, and led the club in at bats (457) while also ranking  second in games (123), hits (114) and stolen bases (13).

A Carolina League mid- and post-season All-Star while playing with Class-A Salem in 2010, Tejeda led all Red Sox minor league players in hits (155) and was second in batting average (.305) that season.

Tejeda was originally signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2006.
