Jake Peavy continues the fight to end all cancer

Cy Young Pitcher will donate $100 for every strikeout in every MLB game on Saturday, June 30 toward Pancreatic Cancer Research

Jake Peavy will start against the New York Yankees today with a heavy heart following the death last Sunday of his longtime friend and mentor, San Diego Padres bullpen coach, Darrel “AK” Akerfelds, who lost his 19-month battle with pancreatic cancer.  Peavy has announced he will contribute $100 for every strikeout thrown in every Major League Baseball game today, Saturday, June 30, 2012, which will go toward pancreatic cancer research in honor of AK.

“AK knew what the percentages were and he just kept fighting with the thought that today could be the day a cure is found, Peavy said. “He was excited we did the raffle in his honor and raised more then $52,000 to aid pancreatic cancer research. He made it to 50 and his birthday was on the day the raffle ended. He battled with so much courage and heart and I will continue the fight until there is an end to all cancer.”

“I do hope there are a lot of strikeouts in baseball today,” said Peavy.
