White Sox recall Donnie Veal from Class AAA Charlotte

BOSTON – Prior to tonight’s game at Boston, the Chicago White Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Donnie Veal from Class AAA Charlotte.  Veal takes the roster spot of left-hander Pedro Hernandez, who was optioned to Charlotte following last night’s game.

Veal, 27, has gone 6-3 with a 2.08 ERA (10 ER/43.1 IP) and 53 strikeouts in 29 relief appearances with Charlotte this season, limiting opponents to a .230 (37-161) average.  The 6-foot-4 and 240-pounder went 17.1 IP without allowing an earned run from April 26-June 6.

Veal originally was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the 2005 draft.  He is 34-36 with a 3.73 ERA (258 ER/622.0 IP) and 632 strikeouts in 169 games (113 starts) over eight minor-league seasons.  Veal also appeared in 19 games in relief with Pittsburgh in 2009, going 1-0 with a 7.16 ERA (13 ER/16.1 IP) and 16 strikeouts.

Veal, who will wear uniform No. 46, is the 21st pitcher to appear on the Sox 25-man roster in 2012.
