Todd Helton placed on 15-day disabled list with torn labrum in right hip

Club Reinstates INF Chris Nelson from 15-day DL

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip labrum tear. Helton will have arthroscopic surgery to repair the hip with Dr. James Genuario. The Rockies have also activated infielder Chris Nelson from the 15-day disabled list. Nelson (#10) will be in uniform and available for tonight's Rockies at Dodgers game (8:10 p.m. MDT).

Helton, 38, is batting .238 (57-for-240) with 16 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs and 37 RBI in 69 games for the Rockies this season. This is Helton's second trip to the disabled this season due to the right hip injury. Helton previously missed 12 games while on the DL from 7/13-27. The five-time NL All-Star is a career .320 Major League hitter (2,420-for-7,565) with 570 doubles, 36 triples, 354 home runs, 1,345 RBI, 1,360 runs scored and 1,295 walks. Helton is the Rockies career leader in all of those categories except career batting average, which he is second.

Nelson, 26, is batting .256 (43-for-168) with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, and 23 RBI in 58 games for the Rockies this season. Nelson appeared in four rehab games with Triple-A Colorado Springs and batted .267 (4-for-15) with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Over parts of three seasons in the Majors with Colorado (2010-12), Nelson has batted .255 (95-for-373) with 20 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 39 RBI and 45 runs scored in 138 games. The infielder missed a total of 17 games while on the disabled list after having an irregular heartbeat.

The Rockies have a full 40-man roster.
