A's reinstate Pennington from disabled list; option Figueroa to Sacramento

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's reinstated shortstop Cliff Pennington from the 15-day disabled list and optioned left-handed pitcher Pedro Figueroa to Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today.

Pennington was batting .197 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 82 games when he was placed on the DL July 20 with left elbow tendinitis.  He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento Friday and went 5 for 11 (.455) with one double, one RBI, three walks and a stolen base in three starts at shortstop.  Pennington had the lowest slugging percentage in the majors (.282) and the second lowest batting average and on-base percentage (.259) when he was placed on the DL.

Figueroa was recalled from Sacramento on Sunday and appeared in two games, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.  It was his fourth stint with the A's this year and he has a 1.20 ERA and .170 opponents batting average in 11 games overall.  However, he has issued 11 walks in 15.0 innings.
