OF Jordan Schafer placed on 15-day DL, OF Brandon Barnes purchased from Triple-A

OKC RHP Juan Abreu designated for assignment

HOUSTON, TX — The Astros have placed outfielder Jordan Schafer on the 15-day Disabled List with a left shoulder separation and have purchased the contract of outfielder Brandon Barnes from Triple A Oklahoma City, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today.

Schafer, who was diagnosed with a separation of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint in his left shoulder, began experiencing discomfort in his shoulder during the Astros series over the weekend in Atlanta.

To make room for Barnes on the 40-man roster, the Astros have designated Oklahoma City RHP Juan Abreu for assignment.

This will be the first Major League stint for Barnes, who began the 2012 season with Double A Corpus Christi (44 games) before being promoted to Oklahoma City, where he has hit .323 in 62 games with 19 doubles, five home runs, 38 RBI and 14 stolen bases. His combined totals at the two levels are a .321 average, 39 doubles, 12 home runs, 69 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Barnes was in Major League camp for Spring Training this season as a non-roster player.

The 26-year-old Barnes, who was originally selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2005 June Draft,  has joined the Astros today and will wear #39.
