Padres recall C Nick Hundley from Triple-A Tucson; Option C Eddy Rodriguez to Triple-A Tucson
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have recalled catcher Nick Hundley from Triple-A Tucson and have optioned catcher Eddy Rodriguez to the same Tucson club. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Hundley, 28, was previously optioned to Tucson on June 30. He played in 13 games total for Tucson, missing time due to a stint on the seven-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. Hundley has started 53 games for San Diego this season, tossing out 19 attempted base stealers, which is tied for third-most among all Major League catchers. Originally selected by the Padres in the second-round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona, he has hit .241 (289-for-1201) with 63 doubles, 11 triples, 33 home runs, 148 RBI, 125 runs scored and 100 walks in 360 games played over parts of five Major League seasons (2008-12), all for San Diego.
Rodriguez, 26, was selected from Single-A Lake Elsinore on July 31, his first Major League stint. The catcher made his Big League debut on August 2 against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, making the start behind the plate that day. He hit a home run in his first career at-bat, becoming just the second Padre in club history to hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat. Originally selected by the Reds in the 20th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami, he has hit .239 (408-for-1708) with 86 doubles, two triples, 58 home runs, 227 RBI and 207 runs scored in 488 games played over parts of seven professional seasons in the Reds (2006-08) and Padres (2011-12) organizations and two seasons in the independent leagues (2009-10)
