A's Reinstate McCarthy from the DL; Place Sogard on 15-Day DL

The Oakland A’s reinstated right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the disabled list and placed infielder Eric Sogard on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 7 with a strained back, the club announced today.

McCarthy was 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 starts when he was placed on the 15-day DL June 24 retroactive to June 20 with a strained right shoulder.  It was his second stint on the DL this year as he was also out from May 18 to June 1 with the same injury.  He made two starts with Triple-A Sacramento on a rehab assignment on July 30 and August 4 and was 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in those starts.  McCarthy brings a career-high six-game winning streak into tonight’s start against Chicago and has a 1.96 ERA and .208 opponents batting average over that seven-start stretch.  He has a 2.54 ERA overall, which is fourth lowest among American League pitchers with 60 or more innings pitched.

Sogard was recalled from Sacramento July 20 for his third stint with the A’s this year and was 7 for 33 (.212) in 15 games since his return.  He was on the A’s Opening Day roster and batted .136 in 21 games before he was optioned to Sacramento May 21.  Sogard returned for a second time June 16 and went 1 for 3 in a start at third base against Los Angeles (NL) June 20 before he was optioned back to Sacramento June 24.  He is batting .167 with two home runs and seven RBI in 37 games overall
