Cubs recall left-handed pitcher Jeff Beliveau
Left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley optioned to Triple-A Iowa
The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Iowa. To make room for Beliveau on the roster, left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley has been optioned to Triple-A.
Beliveau will be available for the Cubs this afternoon against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field.
The 25-year-old Beliveau joins the Cubs for the second time this season after posting no record and a 3.18 ERA (4 ER/11.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances during his first big league stint from July 22-August 20. Beliveau limited opponents to a .250 batting average (identical .250 marks by left-handed and right-handed hitters) and struck out 10 batters in 11.1 innings.
Beliveau went 4-5 with a 3.89 ERA (19 ER/44.0 IP) in 37 relief appearances with Iowa this season, striking out 52 batters in 44.0 innings. The 2011 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year had not pitched above Double-A Tennessee prior to the 2012 campaign. Beliveau was originally selected by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2008 Draft.
Raley completed his 2012 season by going 1-2 with an 8.14 ERA (22 ER/24.1 IP) in five starts with the Cubs and 6-10 with a 3.58 ERA (52 ER/130.2 IP) in 22 minor league starts between Tennessee and Iowa.
