Dodgers select contract OF Bobby Abreu

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers today selected the contract of outfielder Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Albuquerque and recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Withrow from Double-A Chattanooga before placing him on the 60-day disabled list.

Abreu, who will wear No. 12, has posted a .353 batting average and a .450 on-base percentage in five games with Triple-A Albuquerque since being designated for assignment by the Dodgers on August 1. The 38-year-old was originally signed by Los Angeles as a free agent on May 4 and batted .251 with eight doubles, two homers and 17 RBI in 70 games, including a .316 mark (6-for-19) as a pinch-hitter. Overall, Abreu is batting .246 with two homers and 22 RBI in 78 combined games with the Dodgers and Angels this season, but has come through late in games with a .371 average (13-for-35) in close and late situations.
