Padres announce roster moves
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have reinstated right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from the 60-day disabled list, recalled right-hander Brad Boxberger and infielder/outfielder Andy Parrino from Triple-A Tucson and selected catcher Ali Solis from Double-A San Antonio. In addition, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf and catcher Eddy Rodriguez for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.
Bass, 24, was originally placed on the disabled list on June 24 with right shoulder inflammation. In three rehab starts for Triple-A Tucson he posted a 5.63 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP) with nine strikeouts against no walks and just eight hits allowed. In 16 games, 14 starts, for the Padres this season he has gone 2-7 with a 4.70 ERA (44 ER/84.1 IP), a .251 opponents batting average and 72 strikeouts against 33 walks.
Boxberger, 24, is making his fourth stint with San Diego this season. The right-hander made his Major League debut for the Padres in June earlier this season and has posted a 3.52 ERA (6 ER/15.1 IP) with 20 strikeouts against 13 walks in 13 relief outings total for San Diego. In 37 games for Triple-A Tucson, he went 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA (13 ER/43.1 IP) and 62 strikeouts against 19 walks.
Parrino, 26, is making his second stint with San Diego this season. The switch-hitter made his first career Opening Day roster for the Padres this year. In 40 games for San Diego this year, he has hit .174 (16-for-92) with four doubles, one home run, three RBI and seven runs. In 65 games for Triple-A Tucson, he hit .328 (77-for-235) with 23 doubles, three triples, one home run, 32 RBI and 43 runs.
Solis, 24, has hit .283 (93-for-329) with 25 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 40 RBI and 26 runs scored in 87 games for Double-A San Antonio this season. A native of Mexicali, Mexico, he was signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent in February of 2005. Over parts of eight professional seasons in the Padres organization (2005-12), he has hit .242 (314-for-1295) with 72 doubles, five triples, 27 home runs, 161 RBI and 148 runs scored in 389 games played. The catcher also played 21 games in the Mexican League in 2010, hitting .382 (26-for-68) with nine extra-base hits.
Ohlendorf, 30, was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on August 18. The right-hander was signed by the Padres as a Major League free agent earlier this year on June 4. In 13 games, nine starts, for San Diego, he went 4-4 with a 7.58 ERA (41 ER/48.2 IP). Over parts of six Major League seasons with the New York Yankees (2007-08), Pittsburgh Pirates (2008-11) and Padres (2012), he has gone 18-32 with a 5.08 ERA (249 ER/441.1 IP) in 108 games, 73 starts.
Rodriguez, 26, made his Major League debut for the Padres earlier this year on August 2, hitting a home run in first career at-bat. He was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on August 9. In two games total for San Diego, he hit .200 (1-for-5) with the one solo home run. Over 101 games between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Triple-A Tucson this season, he hit .217 (82-for-378) with 17 doubles, 14 home runs, 42 RBI and 40 runs scored. Originally selected by the Reds in the 20th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami, he has hit .237 (417-for-1758) with 90 doubles, two triples, 59 home runs, 233 RBI and 210 runs scored in 502 games played over parts of seven professional seasons in the Reds (2006-08) and Padres (2011-12) organizations and two seasons in the independent leagues (2009-10)
With today’s transactions the Padres currently have 31 players on their active roster.
