A's recall IF Barton, RHP Chavez and IF Weeks from Triple-A Sacramento

The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez and infielders Daric Barton and Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today.

Barton joins the A’s for the second time this year after batting .255 with eight home runs and 35 RBI in 74 games with Sacramento.  He began the season on the A’s disabled list and was reinstated April 9.  Barton batted .198 with a home run and four RBI in 37 games with Oakland before he was optioned to Sacramento June 2.  He also hit .167 with a home run and RBI in five postseason games for the River Cats.

Chavez was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays August 24 for cash considerations and was optioned to Sacramento where he posted a 1.80 ERA in two games, one start.  He also tossed 8.0 scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters in the River Cats 1-0 victory in Game 2 of the first round of the Pacific Coast League playoffs last Thursday against Reno.  Chavez was 1-1 with a 8.44 ERA in nine games, including two starts, with Toronto and 8-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 games, 17 starts, at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Weeks was on the A’s Opening Day roster and started 111 of the A’s first 121 games at second base before he was optioned to Sacramento August 21 after batting .220 in 113 games.  He ranks second in the American League with eight triples but has the lowest slugging percentage in the majors (.302).  Weeks hit .333 with 10 RBI in 10 regular season games with the River Cats and then went 3 for 21 (.143) with a home run and RBI in five postseason contests.
