Fuld to host second annual Diabetes Sports Camp

ST. PETERSBURG, FL—Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Sam Fuld, in partnership with the Rays, University of South Florida Diabetes Center, USF Athletics and Florida Diabetes Camps will host the Second Annual Sam Fuld Diabetes Sports Camp at USF on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3.

Fuld, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10, will be one of the camp’s instructors from the college or professional level?all of whom have type 1 diabetes.  Instruction will be provided in baseball/softball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, cheerleading and possibly golf.

“This camp will provide a great experience for type 1 diabetic kids from all over the state of Florida and from all over the United States,” said Fuld.  “It will give them the chance to share stories with other diabetic kids, learn how to deal with being a diabetic athlete and gain inspiration from peers and coaches.  Counselors from all sports being offered are type 1 diabetics themselves, and each has college or professional experience in their respective sports.  Last year's camp was a huge success, and I’m confident this year will be even better.  I’m excited to make this camp an annual tradition in the Tampa Bay Area.”

Last year 100 kids attended the camp and were treated with a guest appearance by Rays outfielder Matt Joyce and the opportunity to participate in Rays Street Team activities and interact with team mascot Raymond.  Campers can expect more of the same for this year. Details for registration will be announced soon.
