Padres Inf Chase Headley wins Rawlings Gold Glove Award
Third baseman earns 22nd Gold Glove in franchise history and first of his career
Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. announced today that San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley has won a 2012 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
“This is a well-deserved recognition of Chase’s work at third base,” said Padres Manager Bud Black. “To be voted as a Gold Glove winner by managers and coaches is a tremendous honor. We are all proud of Chase’s accomplishments and the all-around player he has become.”
Headley becomes the 10th player in Padres franchise history to win a Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and just the second to win for third base. He joins past winners Tony Gwynn (five awards), Ken Caminiti (three), Benito Santiago (three), Steve Finley (two), Adrian Gonzalez (two), Ozzie Smith (two), Dave Winfield (two), Mike Cameron (one) and Greg Maddux (one). Headley is the Padres’ first winner since Adrian Gonzalez won his second for San Diego in 2009.
The 28-year-old led all Major League third basemen with 159 starts at the corner in 2012, the third-most starts at any position among National Leaguers. His 1,397.0 innings at third base led all of Major League Baseball. He committed just 10 errors in 424 total chances, the most total chances among all NL third basemen, for a .976 fielding percentage, second-best in the Majors among qualifying third basemen.
Presented annually, the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American League and National League, as voted by Major League managers and coaches.
