Texas Rangers acquire catcher Konrad Schmidt on waiver claim from Arizona

Arlington, TX—The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired catcher Konrad Schmidt on a waiver claim from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Schmidt has been added to Texas’ major league roster, which is now at 34 players.

Schmidt, 28, appeared in 4 games for the Diamondbacks this season and spent the rest of the year at Triple-A Reno, batting .277 with 7 home runs, 24 doubles, and 47 RBI in 93 contests.  He threw out 14 of 55 (25.5%) attempted base stealers, the 5th-best figure in the Pacific Coast League.  A midseason All-Star in both the Southern League (2010) and Pacific Coast League (2011), he has spent his entire career in the Arizona organization since being signed as a minor league free agent in 2007.

Schmidt has 8 career games in the majors, all in 2010 and 2012, combining to go 1-for-15 with 2 RBI.  Schmidt, who is currently playing with Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League, had been on Arizona’s 40-man roster since September 13, 2010.
