Cubs, righthander Shawn Camp agree to terms on one-year deal

CHICAGO The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Shawn Camp have agreed to terms on a one-year contract.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Camp, who turned 37 yesterday, returns to the Cubs for his second season after going 3-6 with two saves and a 3.59 ERA (31 ER/77.2 IP) in a career-high 80 relief appearances in 2012.  He tied for the major league lead in appearances and ranked fifth in the National League with 77.2 relief innings.  Camp became just the ninth pitcher in club history to reach 80 appearances, the first since Sean Marshall in 2010.

The durable righthander last season led the Cubs with a career-high 18 holds, retired 57 of his first 80 batters faced (71 percent) and stranded 15 of 22 inherited runners.  Camp struck out 54 batters and walked only 21 in 77.2 innings pitched.  He recorded an ERA of 2.45 or lower in three months (May, July and September/October) and an ERA of 3.95 or lower in every month but August.

Camp joined the Cubs after spending the previous four seasons with Toronto and most of 2012 spring training with Seattle.  He was released by the Mariners on March 23, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on March 26 and was a member of Chicago’s Opening Day roster.

In all or part of nine major league seasons, Camp is 28-32 with 12 saves and a 4.29 ERA (270 ER/566.0 IP) in 512 relief appearances with Kansas City (2004-05), Tampa Bay (2006-07), Toronto (2008-11) and the Cubs.
