Padres announce roster moves

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Adys Portillo as well as outfielders Yeison Asencio and Jaff Decker.  In addition, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Cory Burns for assignment.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

 

            Portillo, 20, went 8-11 with a 3.34 ERA (47 ER/126.2 IP) over 26 starts between Single-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio in 2012.  In his 18 starts with Fort Wayne this past season, the right-hander went 6-6 with a 1.87 ERA (19 ER/91.2 IP) and 81 strikeouts against 45 walks.  Originally signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent in July 2008, the Venezuelan has gone 14-37 with a 4.86 ERA (176 ER/325.2 IP) and 311 strikeouts against 194 walks in 77 games, 72 starts, over parts of four professional seasons (2009-12) in the Padres organization.

 

Asencio, 23, hit .323 (113-for-350) with 21 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 61 RBI and 47 runs scored in 92 games for Single-A Fort Wayne in 2012.  A native of the Dominican Republic, the right-handed hitter claimed the Midwest League batting title this past season with his .323 average.  Originally signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent in July 2009, Asencio has hit .306 (241-for-788) with 48 doubles, 15 triples, 20 home runs, 144 RBI and 140 runs scored in 208 games played over parts of three minor league seasons (2010-12) in the Padres organization.

 

Decker, 22, hit .201 (35-for-174) with four doubles, four triples, four home runs, 16 RBI and 35 runs scored in 56 games played between Rookie-Level Peoria and Double-A San Antonio in 2012.  The left-handed hitter was originally selected by the Padres in the compensation round (42nd overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.  Over parts of five professional seasons (2008-12) in the Padres organization, Decker has hit .264 (393-for-1487) with 83 doubles, 12 triples, 61 home runs, 264 RBI, 309 runs scored and 336 walks in 424 games played.

 

Burns, 25, made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2012, going 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA (11 ER/18.0 IP) and 18 strikeouts against 10 walks over 17 relief outings for San Diego.   The right-hander also went 1-2 with a 3.14 ERA (23 ER/66.0 IP) and 78 strikeouts against 17 walks over 54 relief outings for Triple-A Tucson this past season.  Acquired by the Padres in December 2011 from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for OF Aaron Cunningham, he was originally selected by the Indians in the eighth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.  Over parts of four minor league seasons with the Indians (2009-11) and Padres (2012) organizations, he has gone 7-11 with a 2.36 ERA (56 ER/213.1 IP) and 266 strikeouts against 52 walks in 184 relief outings.
