Rangers re-sign C Geovany Soto to one-year contract

Catcher had been non-tendered on Friday night

Nashville, Tenn. -- The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has signed catcher Geovany Soto to a one-year contract for the 2013 season.  Financial terms were not disclosed, per club policy.

Soto, 29, combined to hit .198 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 97 games for Chicago-NL and Texas in 2012.  He was acquired by the Rangers in a July 31 trade with the Cubs and started behind the plate for 41 of the club’s final 59 regular season contests.  The Rangers were 26-15 in his starts at catcher.  He also caught the final 9 starts by Texas right-hander Yu Darvish, including the lone postseason game.  Soto threw out 4 of the last 10 attempted basestealers to end the season.

The Puerto Rico native has a career .248 average over 602 major league games with Chicago-NL and Texas.  He was the 2008 National League Rookie of the Year, becoming the first-ever N.L. rookie catcher to start an All-Star Game that season.

With the signing of Soto, the Rangers now have 37 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
