D-backs agree to terms with Eric Chavez

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@dbacks) have agreed to terms with infielder Eric Chavez on a one-year contract, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Chavez, who turned 35 on Friday, hit .281 (78-for-278) with 12 doubles, 16 home runs and 37 RBI in 113 games with the Yankees in 2012. He appeared in 64 games (50 starts) at third base and 10 at first (6 starts), while his 16 homers were the most since 2007 (15) and 11 more than his 4-year total (5) from 2008-11.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound left-hander is a career .267 (1,396-for-5,221) hitter with 248 home runs and 850 RBI in 1,491 Major League games with Oakland (1998-2010) and New York-AL (2011-12). Chavez won an American League Silver Slugger Award in 2002 at third base, batting .275 with a career-high 34 home runs and 109 RBI.

Chavez, who resides in Paradise Valley, is a 6-time Gold Glove Award^® winner (2001-06) and is tied with Buddy Bell and Robin Ventura for the fourth-most fielding honors at third base. He owns a career .969 fielding percentage at third, the fifth-best mark all-time (min. 1,000 games) behind Mike Lowell (.974), Brooks Robinson (.971), Rico Petrocelli (.970) and Ken Reitz (.970).

Chavez has appeared in 34 career postseason games (2000-03, ’06, ’11-12) and has hit .192 (24-for-125) with 3 home runs and 12 RBI. He hit .381 with 1 home run and 5 RBI in the 2002 ALDS vs. Twins.
