D-backs acquire Didi Gregorius, Tony Sipp and Lars Anderson from Indians as part of three-team trade

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks (@dbacks) have acquired shortstop Didi Gregorius (@DidiG18), left-handed pitcher Tony Sipp (@SippTony) and first baseman Lars Anderson from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for right-handed pitchers Trevor Bauer, Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Gregorius, along with outfielder Drew Stubbs, had been acquired by Cleveland from Cincinnati in exchange for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, infielder Josh Donald and cash considerations.

Gregorius, 22, was named to the Arizona Fall League’s Top Prospect Team in November after batting .284 (21-for-74) with 3 doubles, 1 home run and 8 RBI in 20 games. Gregorius also finished the season ranked by MLB.com as the Reds’ No. 5 Prospect and Baseball America’s Best Defensive shortstop in the Southern League.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitter combined to hit .265 (133-for-501) with 21 doubles, 11 triples, 7 home runs and 54 RBI in 129 games with Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville in 2012. He played in 8 games with the Reds, batting .300 (6-for-20) with 2 RBI.

Gregorius is a career .271 (470-for-1735) hitter with 69 doubles, 27 triples, 20 home runs and 166 RBI in 443 Minor League games in the Reds’ organization. He entered 2012 rated by Baseball America as Cincinnati’s sixth-best prospect and named the organization’s Best Defensive Infielder and possessing the Best Throwing Arm.

Sipp, 29, went 1-2 with 1 save and a 4.42 ERA (27 ER in 55.0 IP) in 63 relief appearances with the Indians in 2012. He limited left-handed hitters to a .209 average (23-for-110) and posted a 2.64 ERA (9 ER in 30.2 IP) in his final 34 games.

The 6-foot-0, 190-pounder is 11-7 with 2 saves and a 3.68 ERA (90 ER in 220.1 IP) in 248 relief appearances with Cleveland from 2009-12. Sipp’s 61 holds during that span rank 11th in the American League, including a career-high 24 in 2011.

Anderson, 25, combined to hit .250 (99-for-396) with 27 doubles, 9 home runs and 59 RBI in 111 games between Triple-A Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Triple-A Columbus (Indians). He also appeared in 6 games with Boston, going 1-for-8.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound left-hander is a career .272 hitter (745-for-2737) with 187 doubles, 76 home runs and 415 RBI over 748 Minor League games in the Red Sox (2007-12) and Indians (2012) organizations. In 30 games with Boston from 2010-12, Anderson is batting .167 (8-for-48) with 4 RBI.

Anderson, who was named the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year in 2008, was traded from Boston to Cleveland on July 31 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Steven Wright.

Bauer, 21, went 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA (11 ER in 16.1 IP) and .230 opponents average in 4 starts for the D-backs in 2012. He was named the D-backs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going a combined 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA (35 ER in 130.1 IP) and .223 opponents average in 22 starts for Triple-A Reno and Double-A Mobile.

Originally taken as the third-overall selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, Bauer was the first player from that draft to reach the Major Leagues when he made his debut on June 28 @ Braves.

Albers, 29, was a combined 3-1 with a career-low 2.39 ERA (16 ER in 60.1 IP) and career-low .215 opponents average in a career-high 63 relief appearances for the Red Sox and D-backs last season. He was acquired by the D-backs on July 31 along with outfielder Scott Podsednik in exchange for left-handed pitcher Craig Breslow.

In 23 games for the D-backs, Albers went 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA (6 ER in 21.0 IP) and .213 opponents average. He has appeared in 300 career games (23 starts) over parts of 7 season in the Majors with the Astros (2006-07), Orioles (2008-10), Red Sox (2011-12) and D-backs (2012), going 22-30 with a 4.68 ERA.

Shaw, 25, went 1-6 with a 3.49 ERA (23 ER in 59.1 IP) in a career-high 64 relief appearances for the D-backs last season. Over parts of 2 seasons with the D-backs, Shaw went 2-6 with a 3.18 ERA (31 ER in 87.2 IP) in 97 relief appearances.
