Mariners extend 18 invitations to Major League Spring Training
15 of 18 non-roster invites were members of the Mariners organization last season and 11 are homegrown Mariners
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the club has invited 18 players to Major League Spring Training.
The list of invites features several notable names, including 2012 first round draft pick catcher Mike Zunino, Futures Game participant right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker, 2012 Mariners Minor League Player of the Year infielder Stefen Romero, 2012 Mariners Heart and Soul Award winner infielder Brad Miller and Arizona Fall League participants infielder Nick Franklin, left-handed pitcher James Paxton, right-handed pitcher Carson Smith and right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom. The Mariners farm system led all teams with a minor league record 496 wins in 2012, and was recently ranked as the second-best minor league system in baseball by Baseball America writer Jim Callis.
Of the 18 players that have been added to the Spring Training roster (in addition to the 40-man roster), 15 were members of the Mariners organization last season and 11 are homegrown products having been originally drafted or signed by Seattle.
Pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in Peoria, AZ on Feb. 12 (physicals) and hold its first workout Feb. 13. Position players are scheduled to report for physicals Feb. 15 and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 16.
The Mariners Spring Training roster is currently at 58 players (40 roster, 18 non-roster), including 30 pitchers (11 non-roster), 5 catchers (3 non-roster), 15 infielders (4 non-roster) and 8 outfielders (0 non-roster).
