Rockies, Jonathan Herrera avoid arbitration by agreeing to one-year deal

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with infielder Jonathan Herrera. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, per club policy.

Herrera, 28, was a member of the Rockies Opening Day roster for the second-straight season in 2012. The infielder hit .262 (59-for-225) with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and 29 runs scored in 86 games for the Rockies in 2012. Herrera missed a total of 39 games while on the disabled list with two different injuries in 2012 (13 games for strained right hamstring, 26 games for left wrist infection). The Maracaibo, Venezuela native has spent his entire professional career with Colorado after signing as a non-drafted free agent on April 6, 2002. In 294 career Major League games, Herrera has hit .259 (204-for-789) with 21 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs and 50 RBI. Herrera has played second base (159 games), third base (38 games) and shortstop (72 games) in his Major League career.
