Blue Jays sign Happ to contract extension

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed LHP J.A. HAPP to a two-year contract worth US $8.9 million for the 2013 (US $3.7 million) and 2014 (US $5.2 million) seasons, superseding the one-year deal agreed to on January 18, 2013. The club will hold an option for 2015 of US $6.7 million. As part of the contract Happ will make a donation to the Jays Care Foundation.

HAPP, 30, combined to go 10-11 with a 4.79 ERA in 28 games last season with 24 starts between Houston and Toronto. The 6'6", 195 pound left-hander has won 10 or more games twice in his career, while posting a career high 144 strikeouts in 2012. Happ owns a 35-35 career record with a 4.19 ERA in his six seasons with Philadelphia (2007-10), Houston (2010-12) and Toronto (2012). This spring, Happ has posted a 1.90 ERA in seven appearances, six starts, to rank among the Grapefruit League leaders.
