The Boston Red Sox activated designated hitter David Ortiz from the disabled list today. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Thursday night's game.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Ortiz, who began the season on the disabled list with right Achilles tendinopathy, completed a rehabilitation assignment with Pawtucket on Thursday. In his six games, all starts as the designated hitter, he batted .222 (4-for-18) with one home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Prior to his stint with Pawtucket, Ortiz, 37, played in extended spring training games in Fort Myers.  He last appeared in a major league game for the Red Sox on August 24, 2012 against Kansas City at Fenway Park.

Bradley, who turned 23 years old yesterday, appeared in 12 games (10 starts) for the Red Sox this season, all in left field, and hit .097 (3-for-31) with one double, three RBI, and five runs scored. He made his major league debut on Opening Day in Yankee Stadium after batting .419 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 28 games in spring training. At 22 years old, he was the youngest Red Sox outfielder to start on Opening Day since Dwight Evans in 1973.
