Jean Segura of the Milwaukee Brewers Named National League Player of the Week

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending May 12th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In five games last week, Segura ranked among league leaders in nearly every offensive category. The San Juan, Dominican Republic native hit a National League-best .500 (10-for-20) while leading the league in slugging percentage (.950) and on-base percentage (.545). His 19 total bases were the third-highest total in the N.L. while his five runs scored and two stolen bases ranked tied for third and fourth, respectively. Segura also added three doubles and clubbed a pair of home runs last week. On Saturday, the 23-year-old notched his first career four-hit game in a 13-7 loss at Cincinnati. Segura went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, a stolen base and three runs scored in the losing effort. It was one of the youngster's four multi-hit games last week, giving him 16 for the season, which currently ranks tied for first among all Major Leaguers. In Friday night's series-opener at Great American Ball Park, Segura went 2-for-4, including a fourth-inning solo home run as the Brewers fell to the Reds, 4-3. On Tuesday, May 7th, the speedy sophomore went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored to help the Brew Crew win a 6-3 decision over the visiting Rangers, earning a split of a two-game set at Miller Park. Acquired by the Brewers last year in the trade that sent pitcher Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Segura has been a key cog in Milwaukee's lineup this season, his first full year in the big leagues. Through 34 games, his .359 batting average ranks second in the N.L. behind teammate Carlos Gomez (.371). This is his first career Player of the Week honor.

Other noteworthy performances last week included San Francisco's Brandon Crawford (.400, 10 H, 3 R, .464 OBP) and Marco Scutaro (.467, 14 H, HR, 5 RBI, .767 SLG, .467 OBP); Washington's Ian Desmond (.389, 2 HR, 6 RBI, .833 SLG); Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt (.348, 4 HR, 9 RBI, .870 SLG, .423 OBP) and Gerardo Parra (.407, 11 H, HR, 3 RBI, .484 OBP); Anthony Rizzo (.440, HR, 7 RBI, .462 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs; Philadelphia's Chase Utley (.393, 11 H, 5 R, HR, .459 OBP) and Cliff Lee (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 15.0 IP, 9 SO); Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 9 SO, 13.0 IP); Matt Harvey (0-0, 1.13 ERA, 16 SO, 16.0 IP) of the New York Mets; and hurlers Shelby Miller (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 13 SO, 9.0 IP) and Adam Wainwright (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 7 SO, 9.0 IP) of the St. Louis Cardinals.
