Mariners select catcher Jesus Sucre from AAA Tacoma

Infielder Robert Andino designated for assignment.

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today the following roster moves:

  • C Jesus Sucre selected from AAA Tacoma.
  • INF Robert Andino designated for assignment.
  • INF Carlos Triunfel recalled from AAA Tacoma.

Sucre (#2) and Triunfel (#1) will be in uniform and available for tonight's 7:10 p.m. game vs. Texas at Safeco Field.

Sucre, 25, hit .302 (16x53) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 5 RBI and 6 walks in 14 games with AAA Tacoma this season. He has thrown 7 of 18 attempted base runners this season (38.9%), ranking fourth amongst catchers in the PCL rankings he in caught stealing percentage (min. 10 ATT). Sucre has not committed an error behind the plate in 110 consecutive games, dating back to August 27, 2011 while playing for AA Jackson. In 2012, Sucre was the only qualifying catcher in the Southern League to not commit an error. He was one of only five minor league qualifying catchers, including only two full season catchers, to not commit an error behind the plate.

Sucre was originally signed as an International Free Agent with the Atlanta Braves in 2005. He was later signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent July 11, 2011 and re-signed with the Mariners after the 2012 season. In 9 season in the minor leagues, Sucre has hit .253 (445x1758) with 162 runs scored, 78 doubles, 21 home runs and 178 RBI in 498 games. He has also thrown out 42.4% of attempted base stealers (282 SB, 208 CS) in his minor league career.

Triunfel, 23, hit .300 (51x170) with 29 runs scored, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs and 19 RBI in 44 games with AAA Tacoma this season. Triunfel has hit safely in 8 of his last 11 games with 3 multi-hit games, batting .325 (13x40) with 9 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 home run and 3 RBI. He has appeared at three different infield positions this season: SS - 34 games; 2B - 9 games; and 3B - 1 game.

Triunfel appeared in 10 games with the Mariners in 2012, batting .227 (5x22) with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.

Andino, 29, appeared in 29 games (22 starts) for the Mariners this season at three different positions (SS - 18 G/11 GS, 2B - 8 G/GS, 3B - 4 G/3 GS. He batted .184 (14x76) with 5 runs scored, 4 doubles and 4 RBI.

The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, release or outright Andino's contract to the minors.
