Cardinals recall rookie pitcher Michael Blazek
Lefty John Gast placed on 15-Day D.L.
The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled rookie right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek from Springfield (AA) and placed left-handed pitcher John Gast on the 15-day disabled list due to a left shoulder strain that forced him from last night's start in Los Angeles. Blazek, 24, will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.
Blazek was drafted by the Cardinals in the 35th round (1,068th player overall) of the 2007 June draft out of Arbor View High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 6-0, 200-pound righty has appeared in 17 games this season for the Springfield Cardinals, allowing just two earned runs on 11 hits in 19.2 innings pitched (0.92 ERA) while fanning 25. He and Springfield teammate Keith Butler had each saved seven games, ranking T2nd in the Texas League. Blazek also had three Holds and has yet to allow a homer this season.
Blazek becomes the ninth pitcher age 25 or younger to have appeared on the Cardinals roster this season. Gast posted wins in his first two Major League starts following a promotion from Memphis (AAA) on May 14, but was removed from last night's start at Dodger Stadium after facing six batters.
The Cardinals pitching staff has already used a Major League-leading six rookie pitchers who have combined for 11 wins this season.
