Padres recall RHP Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson; option LHP Robbie Erlin to Triple-A Tucson

Erlin recorded his first Major League win last night against Toronto

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson and have optioned left-handed pitcher Robbie Erlin to Tucson. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Erlin, 22, earned his first Major League win in his first start last night by limiting Toronto to two earned runs in 6.2 innings after being recalled from Tucson earlier in the day. In two stints this season with San Diego, Erlin is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA (4 ER, 8.2 IP) with five strikeouts in three games including one start. The southpaw was selected from Tucson earlier this season on April 24 and made his Major League debut on April 30 at Chicago-NL before being sent down on May 2. Over eight starts for Tucson this season, he has gone 4-0 with a 3.79 ERA (17 ER, 40.1 IP) and 37 strikeouts against 13 walks. In his latest outing for Tucson on May 27 vs. Sacramento, he worked 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Erlin was acquired by the Padres from the Texas Rangers along with right-hander Joe Wieland in exchange for right-hander Mike Adams on July, 31 2011. 

Boxberger, 25, has made 17 relief appearances with Tucson this season, going 0-3 with a 5.73 ERA (14 ER, 22.0 IP) with 31 strikeouts. This is his second stint with the Padres this season, posting a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 3.2 IP) in two relief appearances after being recalled on May 2 (optioned May 10). He made his Major League debut with the Padres last season, appearing in 24 games with San Diego during four stints with the club. He recorded 33 strikeouts against 18 walks in his 24 games overall, posting 10.7 strikeouts per 9.0 IP and a .222 (22-for-99) opponent batting average while holding right-handed hitters to a .208 (11-for-53) average and lefties to a .239 (11-for-46) average for San Diego. Boxberger was acquired from Cincinnati along with RHP Edinson Volquez, INF Yonder Alonso and C Yasmani Grandal in exchange for RHP Mat Latos, December 17, 2011.
