Marlins select Colin Moran with sixth overall pick in 2013 First-Year Player Draft

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins tonight selected third baseman Colin Moran with the sixth overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.

Moran, who is a finalist for the 2013 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award for the top amateur player in the country, is a junior All-American at the University of North Carolina. He leads the NCAA with 86 RBI this season and is batting .348 with 13 home runs. Moran was named the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, leading the Tar Heels to the ACC championship and the No. 1 overall seed in this year's College World Series.

The Marlins selected LHP Matthew Krook (San Mateo, CA) from St. Ignatius Prep with their second pick (No. 35 overall) of the night, in Competitive Balance Round A. With their third pick (No. 44 overall), the Marlins selected RHP Trevor Williams (San Diego, CA) from Arizona State University in Round 2. Williams, a junior, was a First Team Pac-12 All-Conference selection as a sophomore, and is 18-8, 3.10 (221.0 IP/76 ER) over his last two seasons. His 2.99 career ERA is the fifth-lowest in school history.

With their final pick of the night (No. 73 overall), the Marlins took RHP Logan Suggs (Sulfur Springs, TX) out of the University of Arkansas in Competitive Balance Round B. Suggs, a junior, was named a preseason All-American by Baseball America, and went 0-0, 1.74 (20.2/4) with 13 saves and 23 strikeouts in 23 relief appearances for the Razorbacks this season.

The Draft will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Rounds 3-10; the Marlins will kick off Day Two with the seventh pick of Round 3 (#80 overall). The Draft will conclude on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. with Rounds 11-40.
