Cubs conclude second day of 2013 MLB Player Draft
The Chicago Cubs today completed the second day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The club thus far has selected 10 players. The third and final day of the draft is tomorrow with rounds 11-40.
The Cubs selected left-handed hitting outfielder Jacob Hannemann from Brigham Young University in the third round (75th overall), right-handed pitcher Tyler Skulina from Kent State University in the fourth round (108th overall) and right-handed pitcher Trey Masek out of Texas Tech University in the fifth round (138th overall).
Hannemann was recommended by area scout Steve McFarland, Skulina was recommended by area scout Tim Adkins and Masek was recommended by area scout Trey Forkerway.
Hannemann, 22, was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year this season after spending two years away from the game while on a Mormon mission. He batted .344 (74-for-215) with 16 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 29 RBI, a .415 on-base percentage and a .553 slugging mark in 51 games for BYU, going 14-for-15 in stolen base attempts. Hannemann batted .385 with a .453 on-base percentage and a 1.084 OPS in his final 42 contests beginning February 27.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, 195-pound Hannemann was a 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and was named to both the All-WCC First Team and All-WCC Freshman Team by the league's coaches. He was selected by Kansas City in the 48th round of the 2010 draft, but did not sign.
Skulina, 21, went 6-4 with a 3.36 ERA (35 ER/93.2 IP) in 15 games for the Golden Flashes this season, walking 34 and striking out 102, good for an average of 9.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched. A Second Team All-Mac selection for the second-straight year, he recorded 10 or more strikeouts three times and held the opposition to a .209 batting average (74-for-354) while surrendering just five home runs in 93.2 innings.
The 6-foot, 5-inch, 235-pound Skulina was named a 2013 Louisville Slugger Pre-Season Second Team All-American after going 11-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 18 starts in 2012. The righthander sat out the 2011 campaign after transferring to Kent State from the University of Virginia. He was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 46th round of the 2010 draft, but did not sign.
Masek, 21, was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Semifinalist with the Red Raiders this season, his junior year. He went 5-2 with a 1.82 ERA (16 ER/79.0 IP), three complete games and one shutout in 11 starts. The Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection struck out a team-high 69 hitters and walked 22 while not allowing a home run in 79.0 innings of work. The righthander held the opposition to a .206 batting average (56-for-272) during the campaign.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, 185-pound Masek became one of just five Red Raiders since 1991 to lead the team in wins, ERA, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Masek is just the second Texas Tech player in the last 14 years to be named to the Golden Spikes Award list. A native of Austin, Texas, Masek was named the Louisville Slugger Texas High School Player of the Year as a senior at Giddings High School.
The Cubs last night selected right-handed hitting third baseman Kris Bryant out of the University of San Diego with the second overall pick. In the second round, the Cubs selected left-handed pitcher Robert Zastryzny from the University of Missouri, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Through the first two days, the Cubs have selected seven pitchers (five righthanders and two lefthanders), one infielder and two outfielders. Additionally, the Cubs have selected nine college players and one high school player.
