A's select nine players on day 2 of First-Year Player Draft

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's selected nine players on Day 2 of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The picks included first baseman Ryon Healy (3rd round, Oregon), left-handed pitcher Chris Kohler (supplemental, Los Osos HS), right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey (4th, San Diego), right-handed pitcher Bobby Wahl (5th, Ole Miss), right-handed pitcher Kyle Finnegan (6th, Texas State), right-handed pitcher Dustin Driver (7th, Wenatchee HS), outfielder Tyler Marincov (8th, North Florida), left-handed pitcher Matt Stalcup (9th, Pittsburg State) and left-handed pitcher Jerad Grundy (10th, Kentucky).

Healy batted .333 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI in 59 games with Oregon. He added 28 walks for a .408 on-base percentage and slugged .566. Healy was a All-Pac-12 Selection after leading the league in home runs while ranking third in RBI and slugging percentage. The 21-year-old right-handed hitter set Ducks single season records in doubles (17) and RBI.

Kohler was 11-1 with a 2.24 ERA in 12 starts as a senior for Los Osos HS. He struck out 113 batters in 72.0 innings while holding the opposition to a .201 batting average. Covey logged a 5-4 mark and a 5.05 ERA in 18 games, 16 starts, for the Torreros. He yielded just two home runs in 76.2 innings.

Wahl was 10-0 with a 2.03 ERA and .197 opponents batting average in 16 starts for Ole Miss. He earned third team Louisville Slugger All-America honors and was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. In three seasons with the Rebels, he went 17-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 51 games, 34 starts.

Finnegan was 5-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 19 games, 10 starts, as a junior at Texas State. Driver was 6-2 with a 1.09 ERA in 12 games, nine starts, and struck out 71 in 51.1 innings for Wenatchee High School. Marincov hit .331 with eight home runs and 54 RBI in 59 games with North Florida to earn All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors. He also walked 34 times for a .420 on-base percentage and was successful in 21 of 23 stolen base attempts. Stalcup posted a 7-4 record with three complete games and a 3.91 ERA in 14 games, 12 starts, for Pittsburg State. He struck out 95 batters in 71.1 innings and ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (11.99). Grundy went 6-6 with a 4.86 ERA as a senior at Kentucky. The A's were the fourth team to draft him over the last five years.

The A's selected college players with nine of their 12 picks over the first two days. The breakdown includes eight pitchers, two infielders and two outfielders.

The final day of the draft begins tomorrow at 10:00 am with rounds 11 through 40.
