Red Sox select eight players on second day of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft
BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox today continued their participation in Major League Baseball's 2013 First-Year Player Draft with eight additional selections in rounds 3-10. Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Amiel Sawdaye made the announcement.
Over the first two days of the draft, Boston has selected seven pitchers (four right-handers, three left-handers), two outfielders, and one catcher. Of the 10 players drafted, three are from high school and seven are from college.
With their first pick today, the Red Sox selected catcher Jon Denney in the third round (81st overall) from Yukon (OK) High School. As a senior this season, he hit .459 (51-for-111) with 14 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 46 RBI, 39 walks, and 17 runs scored in 42 games with Yukon. He was named a 2013 Rawlings First-Team All-American and was the No. 3 rated draft-eligible catcher according to Baseball America. As a junior in 2012, he was named an Under Armour All-American, a Louisville Slugger All-American, and a Rawlings Underclassmen Second Team All-American.
Today's picks also included left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell, Boston's fifth-round selection, who went 6-5 with a 3.72 ERA this season as a junior at the University of Kentucky. His father, right-hander Jack Littrell Jr., pitched in the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977-78) and Montreal Expos (1980) organizations, while his grandfather, Jack Littrell Sr., appeared in 111 big league games as an infielder for the Philadelphia Athletics (1952, 1954), Kansas City Athletics (1955), and Chicago Cubs (1957).
