Padres select eight players on second day of 2013 First-Year Player Draft

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today selected eight players on the second day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. The 40-round draft concludes tomorrow with rounds 11-40. 

After the second day of drafting, the Padres have selected a total of 11 players through the first 10 rounds. The 11 players consist of five pitchers (all right-handed), three infielders and three outfielders. San Diego has drafted six high school players and five college players. 

Bryan Verbitsky, 20, was selected by the Padres in the third round (86th overall). He is a 6-0, 205 pound right-hander out of Hofstra University (NY) who posted a 3-4 record with a 2.66 ERA (13 ER, 44.0 IP) over 19 appearances and three starts during his junior season for the Pride. He ranks second all-time at Hofstra in saves (11) and 12th in appearances (57). A two-way player, Verbitsky hit .204 (10-for-409) with two home runs and 10 RBI in 2013, including a .261 mark (6-for-23) with both home runs and eight RBI coming in Colonial Athletic Association play. He hit .322 with a .522 slugging percentage with six doubles, four home runs and 23 RBI in 29 games as a position player in 2012.

Mason Smith, 18, was selected by the Padres in the fourth round (118th overall). He is a 6-2, 195-pound outfielder out of Rocky Mountain High School in Idaho. At pick 118, Smith is the 10th-highest draft selection ever as high schooler from the state of Idaho. The Meridian, Idaho native hit .421 with six doubles, one triple, six home runs, 35 RBI, 14 stolen bases, 16 walks with a .582 on-base percentage and a .926 slugging percentage as a senior at Rocky Mountain High School in 2013. He was rated by Baseball America as the 51st-best high school prospect in the 2013 draft class and is committed to attend the University of Utah in the fall.

Josh VanMeter, 18, was selected by the Padres in the fifth round (148th overall). He is a 5-11, 165-pound shortstop out of Norwell High School in Indiana. He was named to the 2013 Rawlings 3rd Team All-American Central - All Region 1st Team. VanMeter went 12-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 98 strikeouts on the mound his senior season. He also tallied a .444 batting average with 9 home runs and 36 RBI. He was also a standout basketball player at Norwell, leading the basketball Knights to a state runner-up finish his junior year. VanMeter was an all-state player for the Knights as a sophomore and was honorable mention all-state as a junior. Van Meter is committed to attend Illinois State University in the fall.

Trevor Gott, 20, was selected by the Padres in the sixth round (178th overall). He is a 6-0, 190-pound right-handed pitcher out of the University of Kentucky. He posted a 4-1 record with a 1.20 ERA (4 ER, 30.0 IP) with a school record 12 saves as a junior for the Wildcats in 2013. He struck out 35 batters against just five walks and held the opposition to just a .235 average in 23 relief appearances. In three seasons in Lexington, he is Kentucky's all-time saves leader with 23 and has appeared on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's "Stopper of the Year" watch list twice, an award given annually to the country's best college reliever.

Jake Bauers, 17, was selected by the Padres in the seventh round (208th overall). He is a 6-1, 195-pound left-handed hitter out of Marina High School in California. He posted a .571 average (48-for-84) with seven doubles, one triple, 10 home runs and 25 RBI in his senior season for the Vikings in 2013. The Huntington Beach native was named to the Rawlings California Reion All-High School Senior team in 2013. Bauers is committed to attend the University of Hawaii.

Adrian De Horta, 18, was selected by the Padres in the eighth round (238th overall). He is a 6-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher out of South Hills High School in California. The La Puenta, California native was tabbed by Baseball America as the 114th-best draft prospect in the state of California in 2013. He attended the same high school as current Lake Elsinore Storm manager, Shawn Wooten. De Horta is committed to attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall.

Adam Cimber, 22, was selected by the Padres in the ninth round (268th overall). The 6-2, 180-pound right-hander pitcher out of the University of San Francisco (CA) finished the 2013 season with a 6-3 with a school-record nine saves and a 3.74 ERA while striking out 59 batters in 57.0 innings of work. The Puyallup, WA native led the West Coast Conference in appearances (34) and relief appearances (33) while his save total ranked second among conference closers. A native of Puyallup, Wash., Cimber spent his first three collegiate seasons at the University of Washington, where he was 9-8 with nine saves and a 4.15 ERA in 73 appearances including four starts for the Huskies (2010-12).

Justin Livengood, 23, was selected by the Padres in the 10th round (298th overall). He is a 6-3, 215-pound right-hander out of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The right-hander made 29 relief appearances this past season, going 1-3 with a 2.94 ERA (11 ER, 33.2 IP) and 48 strikeouts against 26 walks and 28 hits allowed. Livengood earned All-Central Carolina Conference honors his junior and seniors seasons at Ledford High School (KC) in 2007 and 2008, while being named the Team MVP for his senior campaign after going 10-0 with a 1.01 ERA.
