2013 Houston Astros First-Year Player Draft information

HOUSTON SELECTIONS (DAY 1-3): The Houston Astros selected 40 players in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The club selected 16 right-handed pitchers, eight left-handed pitchers, seven infielders, five outfielders and four catchers.

"We took a lot of college players towards the top of the draft," said Astros Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Elias. "They were players that our scouts loved because of their tools, and they also have long track records of performance behind them. That's something that we look for, that blend of guys that have already performed and demonstrated their baseball skills on a big stage and guys that our scouts see a future in because of their Major League tools."

The Astros selected 31 of their 40 draft picks out of the collegiate ranks.

Today's portion of the draft included rounds 11-40.

COLLEGE RANKS: The Astros first five selections in the 2013 Draft were out of the collegiate ranks. The last time Houston selected five consecutive college players to begin a draft was in 2001, when the Astros' first 11 choices were college players. Seven of the 11 eventually made the Majors, including 2B Chris Burke (1st round) and RHP Kirk Saarloos (3rd round).

THE PITCH: The Astros selected three pitchers as their first three picks in the 2013 Draft. The last time Houston drafted three straight pitchers to open a draft was in 2002 (six straight). Three of those six eventually made the Majors.
