Cardinals activate pitcher Jake Westbrook from DL

Michael Wacha optioned to Memphis (AAA)

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have activated righthanded pitcher Jake Westbrook from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha to Memphis (AAA). Westbrook will make the start for St. Louis tonight at Miami (6:10 p.m. CT).

Westbrook was placed on the 15-day DL on June 9, with right elbow inflammation. He made two rehab starts [Springfield (AA) 3.2IP, 6H, R, 5K & Peoria (A) 7.0IP, 4H, R, 5K] prior to this evening's start. In his six starts to begin the season, Westbrook had an N.L.-leading 1.62 ERA and had not allowed an earned run in three of those six starts.

Wacha was purchased from Memphis (AAA) on May 30, and had made three starts for St. Louis. He was 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA during his starts, including his Major League debut in which he allowed just one run on two hits in a no decision (4-2 loss) vs. Kansas City.
