Cubs trade OF Scott Hairston to Washington for Minor League RHP Ivan Pineyro

The Chicago Cubs today acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Ivan Pineyro from the Washington Nationals for outfielder Scott Hairston.   

Pineyro, 21, has combined to go 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA (28 ER/77.2 IP) in 15 starts between Single-A Hagerstown and Potomac. He began the season with Hagerstown and went 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA (23 ER/66.0 IP) in 13 starts to earn the promotion to High-A ball, where he went 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (5 ER/11.2 IP) in two starts with Potomac. Between the two stops, Pineyro combined to strike out 72 batters and walk only 22 in 77.2 innings.

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound righthander signed with the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2010. Pineyro has gone 13-11 with a 3.17 ERA (72 ER/204.1 IP) in 42 professional starts.

Hairston, 33, batted .172 (17-for-99) with two doubles, eight home runs and 19 RBI in 52 games with the Cubs this season. He agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the club on February 10, 2013.
