White Sox recall Donnie Veal from Class AAA Charlotte

Prior to today's split doubleheader at Philadelphia, the Chicago White Sox recalled left-hander Donnie Veal from Class AAA Charlotte.

Veal, 28, takes the roster spot of left-hander Matt Thornton, who was traded to the Boston Red Sox with cash considerations last night in exchange for minor-league outfielder Brandon Jacobs.

Veal is 1-0 with an 8.59 ERA (7 ER/7.1 IP) and one hold in 14 appearances over two stints with the White Sox this season. He made nine consecutive scoreless appearances (4.2 IP) to start the season.

Left-handers are hitting just .212 (14-66) during his major-league career.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder has gone 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA (8 ER/26.2 IP), two saves and 30 strikeouts over 17 games with Charlotte in 2013.

Veal will wear uniform No. 46.
