Lineups for baseball's 84th Midsummer Classic announced

FLUSHING, NEW YORK - The 2013 All-Star Game managers, Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants and Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers, have announced their starting lineups for the 84th Midsummer Classic, to be played on Tuesday at Citi Field. The lineups were announced at this afternoon's 2013 All-Star Game Press Conference at Citi Field.

Leyland's American League lineup will be:

Bochy's National League lineup will be:

5. CARLOS GONZALEZ, COL - LF

The starting pitching match-up in the 84th Midsummer Classic will feature two of the game's preeminent young power pitchers, Matt Harvey (7-2, 2.35 ERA, 130.0 IP, 91 H, 147 SO) of the host New York Mets and Max Scherzer (13-1, 3.19 ERA, 129.2 IP, 96 H, 152 SO) of the Detroit Tigers. Harvey, 24, will become the youngest starting pitcher in the All-Star Game since fellow Met Dwight Gooden, at 23, started the 1988 Midsummer Classic. The Connecticut native also will become the first member of a host Club to start the All-Star Game since Roger Clemens of the Astros was the National League's starting pitcher in Houston in 2004.

Scherzer will become the second consecutive Tiger to start the Midsummer Classic, following teammate Justin Verlander at the 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City. It marks the first time that one Major League Club has had consecutive starters in the Midsummer Classic since the Arizona Diamondbacks had three straight starters from 2000-2002 (Randy Johnson in 2000-01, Curt Schilling in 2002) and the first time for an A.L. Club since 1989-90, when Dave Stewart and Bob Welch represented the Oakland Athletics as starters. Before taking the loss in his most recent start, Scherzer's 13-0 mark was the best start to a season since Clemens began the 1986 season with a 14-0 record. Scherzer became the first pitcher in franchise history to win his first 13 decisions and he posted a franchise-record 19 straight starts without taking a loss.

In addition, as initially announced last night, St. Louis Cardinals closer Edward Mujica has been named to replace teammate Adam Wainwright on the National League's active All-Star roster. Mujica is 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 41 games this season. The first-time All-Star has posted 26 saves. In his 41.0 innings of work, he has allowed just 28 hits and two walks while fanning 34. Opponents are batting just .188 against the Venezuela native. Wainwright, now a second-time N.L. All-Star, will attend the festivities with full honors.

The 2013 Midsummer Classic will be played at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16th. The 84th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed.
