Cardinals recall reliever Fernando Salas

Chris Carpenter scheduled for rehab start tomorrow at Memphis (AAA)

ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 19, 2013 - As they prepare to open play following this week's All-Star break, the St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled right-handed reliever Fernando Salas from Memphis (AAA) for tonight's series opener against San Diego. The Cardinals also have announced that pitcher Chris Carpenter is scheduled to make his second injury rehabilitation assignment start tomorrow (Sat., July 20) for Memphis.

Salas, who went on the 15-day disabled list May 21 due to right shoulder inflammation, was un-scored upon in 10 of 11 appearances for the Triple-A Redbirds, going 1-1 with a 0.77 ERA and four saves. Salas struck out 11 and walked just one in 11.2 innings, limiting the opposition to a .171 BA.

The 28-year-old Salas was 0-2, 3.86 ERA in 15 games prior to going on the disabled list (16.1 IP/12 SO). His last appearance with the Cardinals came on May 20 at San Diego.

Carpenter worked into the third inning this past Monday (July 15) for Springfield (AA) in his initial injury rehab start, striking out five in 2.2 innings of work.

The Cardinals optioned right-handed reliever Keith Butler to Memphis following last Sunday night's (July 14) game at Chicago.
