Cardinals disable Matt Holliday
Pacific Coast League All-Star Brock Peterson purchased from Memphis (AAA)
The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Matt Holliday (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list today, retroactive to July 12. The Cardinals also announced that they have purchased right-handed hitting first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson from Memphis (AAA). Peterson is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game against San Diego and will wear uniform #41.
Peterson, who along with Memphis pitcher Michael Wacha were recently named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, was batting .306 (106-for-346) in 93 games at Memphis. Peterson has clubbed a PCL-leading 22 home runs with 66 RBI (4th) and he is ranked 2nd in both slugging pct. (.564) and on-base + slugging pct. (.946). His 22 round-trippers are tied with Springfield's (AA) Xavier Scruggs for the Cardinals organizational lead.
Peterson was batting a lofty .341 (45-for-132) against lefties this season and he owns a .301 (34-for-113) batting average with runners in scoring position.
The 6-3, 215-pound Peterson began his professional career in 2003 after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins (49th round) in June 2002 out of W.F. West High School in Chehalis, WA. He has compiled a .274 (1131-for-4129) career batting mark with 168 home runs and 649 RBI in 1,163 minor league games. Peterson signed with the Cardinals as a minor league free-agent on August 14, 2012 following a one-plus year stint with Bridgeport of the independent Atlantic League.
Peterson, 29, will be making his Major League debut with this first game appearance, and will become the 10th player to make a big league debut for the Cardinals this season.
Holliday injured his hamstring in the 4th inning of the Cardinals July 11 game at Chicago while running to first base and had not appeared in a game since then.
