Cardinals acquire Shortstop from Cleveland; Marc Rzepczynski Dealt for Minor Leaguer Juan Herrera

ST. LOUIS, MO., July 30, 2013 - The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired minor league shortstop Juan Herrera from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for left-handed pitcher Marc Rzepczynski who the Cardinals had optioned to Memphis (AAA) earlier today.

Herrera, 20, was batting .275 in 39 games this season for Mahoning Valley of the New York-Penn League (A). He has hit 9 doubles with a homer and 11 RBI. The 5-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting native of Bani, Dominican Republic, was signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free-agent on October 6, 2010.

Herrera will be assigned to the State College (Pa.) Spikes roster of the New York-Penn League (A).
