Cubs select the contract of INF Donnie Murphy, OF Julio Borbon designated for assignment

The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of infielder Donnie Murphy from Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Julio Borbon was designated for assignment after yesterday's game.

Murphy, who will wear uniform number eight, will be available for the Cubs this afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

Murphy, 30, batted .265 (80-for-302) with 18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 89 games with Iowa this season. He posted a .338 on-base percentage and a .457 slugging percentage, good for a .795 OPS. In the field, Murphy saw action at shortstop (73 games), second base (seven games) and third base (five games). The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Murphy signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on April 6 after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers near the end of spring training.

The right-handed batter and thrower has spent all or part of seven seasons in the majors with Kansas City (2004-05), Oakland (2007-08) and the Marlins (2010-12). He is a career .205 hitter (118-for-577) with 35 doubles, 18 home runs and 82 RBI in 244 games. Defensively, Murphy has seen action at shortstop (70 games), third base (66 games) and second base (63 games) during his big league career.

Borbon, 27, was claimed off waivers from Texas on April 19. He has batted .200 (21-for-105) with one home run and three RBI in 73 games this season.
