Red Sox activate outfielder Daniel Nava from paternity leave list
Right-hander Steven Wright optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder Daniel Nava from the paternity leave list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Steven Wright was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Nava will be active for tonight's game against the Royals in Kansas City.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Nava, 30, was placed on paternity leave on Monday. He has hit .282 (94-for-333) with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 53 RBI, 55 runs, and 39 walks. His .371 on-base percentage leads all qualifying major league switch-hitters and ranks second among American League outfielders.
Wright, 28, has made four appearances in three stints with the Red Sox this year, going 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA (8 ER/13.1 IP), 10 strikeouts, nine walks, and a .245 opponent batting average (12-for-49). The knuckleball pitcher made his first career major league start in his last outing for the Red Sox on Tuesday at Houston and gave up three runs in 1.0 inning of work. He has spent the majority of the 2013 season with Pawtucket, where he is 5-6 with a 3.89 ERA (46 ER/106.1 IP), 55 walks, and 81 strikeouts in 19 starts.
