Padres recall OF Jaff Decker from Triple-A Tucson and place OF Carlos Quentin on 15-day DL

CINCINNATI – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled outfielder Jaff Decker from Triple-A Tucson and have placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 31, with a right knee strain.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Jaff, 23, pronounced “Jeff,” is making his third career Major League stint, all this season, and will be available for tonight’s game in Cincinnati at 7:10 C.T.. The Peoria, AZ native made his only two big league appearances in pinch-hitting roles on June 20 and 21 against the Dodgers and drew a walk and reached base on an error, respectively.  In 100 games with Tucson this season, the left-handed hitter has hit .293 (97-for-331) with 23 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 38 RBI, 60 runs scored, 53 walks and a .389 on-base percentage.  Originally signed by the Padres as a supplemental-round selection (42nd overall) in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .270 (490-for-1818) with 106 doubles, 13 triples, 70 home runs, 302 RBI, 369 runs scored, 389 walks and a .403 on-base percentage in 524 games played over parts of six minor leagues seasons (2008-13) in the Padres organization. He will wear uniform number one.

Quentin, 30, has hit .275 (76-for-276) with 21 doubles, 13 home runs, 45 RBI and 42 runs scored in 82 games played for the Padres this season Since May 24, a span of 52 games, the right-handed hitter has hit a .323 (60-for-186) clip with 15 doubles, 31 RBI and 30 runs, raising his average from .178 to .275 in that span.   Over parts of eight Major League seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2006-07), Chicago White Sox (2008-11) and Padres (2012-13), he has hit .255 (679-for-2660) with 167 doubles, six triples, 150 home runs, 474 RBI and 407 runs scored in 784 games played.
