Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson of the Detroit Tigers named the American League Co-Players of the Week

Detroit Tigers teammates Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the week ending August 11th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Cabrera batted .429 (12-for-28) with two doubles, four homers, 11 RBI and seven runs scored over seven games to notch his 10th career weekly award. Jackson followed suit with a .371 (13-for-35) batting average with four doubles, two triples, two homers, two RBI and nine runs scored over seven games to win his second career Player of the Week Award (last accomplished for the week ending September 5, 2011). They are the first pair of Tigers teammates to win co-player honors since the award's inception in 1974.

In an A.L. Central Division showdown with the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, the 30-year-old Cabrera had an RBI-double and a run scored to help lead Detroit to a 5-1 victory at Progressive Field. Miguel's run-scoring double gave him 100 RBI on the season, marking the 10th straight year he has hit the century mark for RBI. In addition, he became just the sixth player in Major League history to reach the plateau over 10 consecutive campaigns (Elias Sports Bureau). On Wednesday, Cabrera (2-for-4) and Jackson (2-for-7) each homered, with Austin adding a double and scoring the go-ahead as Detroit edged the Tribe, 6-5, in 14 innings. In the series finale on Thursday, Cabrera went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, three RBI and a run scored while Jackson added a triple among his two hits and scored two runs as the Tigers defeated the Indians, 10-3, to sweep their first four-game series over Cleveland in 25 years.

The win extended Detroit's season-long winning streak to 12 games. Next, with the Tigers facing a two-run deficit in the ninth inning of Friday's contest against New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, Jackson (4-for-6) collected his third double of the game and later came around to score on a two-out, game-tying home run by Cabrera to knot the game at 3-3. The pair's late-game heroics proved not enough, however, as the Yankees prevailed with a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the Bronx. On Saturday, the pair combined to go 5-for-9 with five runs scored and two RBI as Detroit coasted to a 9-3 triumph over the Yanks. Cabrera and Jackson collected two of the Tigers' three homers on the day. On Sunday, Cabrera teamed with Victor Martinez on two solo homers off Rivera to tie the game at 4-4, but the ninth-inning blasts again fell short as New York's Brett Gardner collected his second walk-off hit in three days, this one a solo homer, as the Yankees went on to defeat the Tigers, 5-4.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Oakland's Josh Reddick (.316, 5 HR, 8 RBI), who tied a Major League record with five home runs over two games on Friday and Saturday, becoming the first Oakland hitter to accomplish the feat since Mark McGwire in 1995; and Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie (1-1, shutout vs. Minnesota on August 5th) and Greg Holland (3 SV, 3.0 IP, 6 SO).
