Rays acquire David DeJesus from Nationals

ST. PETERSBURG, FL-The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired outfielder David DeJesus from the Washington Nationals for a player to be named or cash considerations. The 11-year veteran is expected to join the team prior to tonight's game vs. the New York Yankees, with a corresponding roster move to be announced later.

DeJesus, 33, had been acquired by the Nationals from the Chicago Cubs on Monday and appeared in three games for Washington this week. In 87 games this season he has hit a combined .247 (71-for-287) with six home runs, 27 RBI, 19 doubles and a .327 on-base percentage. Against right-handed pitching, the left-handed hitter is batting .264 (18-for-242) this season with all six of his home runs, and owns a career .290 mark with a .366 on-base percentage and .448 slugging percentage.

DeJesus, who is attempting to reach the postseason for the first time, has spent time with the Kansas City Royals (2003-10), Oakland Athletics (2011), Cubs (2012-13) and Nationals (2013). In 1,242 career games, he owns a .279 batting average, .353 on-base percentage and .417 slugging percentage with 1,281 hits, 254 doubles, 61 triples, 86 home runs and 513 RBI. He hit .300 twice, in 2008 (.307) and 2010 (.318). Since 2004, his 60 triples are seventh most in the majors.

This season, DeJesus has started 64 games in center field and three games in left field. He owns a career .992 fielding percentage and has played in 651 games in center field, 320 in right field and 295 in left field. 

In 2012, DeJesus was chosen as the Cubs nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. He was drafted by the Royals in the fourth round of the 2000 June Draft out of Rutgers University.
